Third Harmonic Generation Unit

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Impulse Optics introduces a third harmonic generation, THG, unit for Ti:sapphire. The THG unit adds new wavelength ranges to an existing Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser. The unit uses the Ti:sapphire fundamental wavelength to generate a wide range of secondary wavelengths in the visible blue and UV, and the unit includes a second harmonic generation unit.

Impulse Optics Introduces a Third Harmonic Generation Unit

Monday, January 22nd, 2007

Encinitas, CA, January 22, 2007 - Impulse Optics introduces a third harmonic generation (THG) unit for Ti:sapphire. The THG unit adds new wavelength ranges to an existing Ti:sapphire femtosecond laser. The unit uses the Ti:sapphire fundamental wavelength to generate a wide range of secondary wavelengths in the visible blue and UV, and the unit includes a second harmonic generation (SHG) unit.

Using highly efficient non linear crystals, the output of a Ti:sapphire ultrafast laser source is frequency doubled with a SHG unit. The resulting blue light is recombined in a second nonlinear crystal with the fundamental laser output, creating third harmonic light. When pumped with a Ti:sapphire laser operating in the near-ir from 700-950 nm, the THG unit output wavelength will be in the UV from 240 - 310 nm, and the SHG unit output wavelength will be in the long UV and visible blue from 350 - 475 nm.

The THG unit produces between 4-10% conversion efficiency for the wavelength range of Ti:sapphire, and the SHG unit will produce better than 20% conversion efficiency. Pulse broadening below 100 fs is available.

The THG unit from Impulse Optics is an affordable and easily installed solution for adding useful wavelength ranges to any femtosecond laser system. Extended frequency ranges will increase capabilities for research, and the ranges are very useful in specific applications such as imaging, microscopy and spectroscopy.
